2019 Residential Energy code changes for New Construction/Addition/Remodel/ADU as of 1/1/2020

These are the major changes that are changing with the 2019 Code

Solar Requirement on all New Constructions (ADU and New homes)

All exterior walls shall be 2×6 with R-21 Insulation and R-5 Rigid insulation on exterior

All attics shall be high performance: R-38 at ceiling joist and R-19 at rafters or R-5 below roofing system

All new construction shall have tankless water heaters.

All Electric Building Supported

2013 T24 Energy Report Code changes for New Construction, Alteration, and Addition submitted after July 1, 2014

New Construction:

Solar:
Solar Ready Roof on developments of 10 homes or greater

Envelope:

Whole House Fan (HERS Rated)
High Performing Window U-Factor of .32 (all climate zones) or better and a SHGC .25 (in climate zone 2,4, and 6-16)
20% maximum glazing
5% glazing on west side of building (in climate zone 2,4, and 6-16)
Radiant Barrier being a standard roof deck system
Min. 50 cfm fan or greater (3 sones less) for all bathrooms
Min. 100 cfm or greater that is vented outside (3 sones or less) for Kitchen areas

HVAC:

R-6 Ducting (all ducts in conditioned space must be HERS tested)
Verified Duct Leakage Testing (HERS Rated):
6% or less w/ air handler
4% or less w/o air handler

Insulation:

Pipe Insulation on all 3/4″ or greater size pipe
Min. R-30 Ceiling insulation
Min. R-19 Floor Insulation
Min. R-13 Wall Insulation

Bathroom Lighting:

Min. 1 High Efficacy light must be installed
All can lights recessed into insulation must be IC/AT rated

Water Heater:

Must have a 120V plug within 3 feet or water heater and use Type 3, Type 4 or Type B vent
Gas line capable of supplying at leak 200,000 Btu/Hr

Addition/Alteration/ Remodel:

This requirements change from project to project based on climate zone and scope of project.
Duct testing will be required on all ducts installed greater than 40′ length

5% glazing on west side of building (in climate zone 2,4, and 6-16)
